Today TVLand aired "The Lonely House". The episode was intended to feature Adam, but because PR had been injured, ML took the lead. I decided to watch the episode with this in mind.

Although ML does a decent job, the story portrays a maturity that Little Joe didn't develop into much later in the series; it's a maturity that is more suited to the character of Adam. The bank errand - to secure cash for a widow in need - is a task that normally would fall to Adam. During the bank robbery, Cartwright talks the lead outlaw out of shooting the bank teller, reminding him that he won't hang for robbery, but he would for murder; that's certainly more an Adam tactic than one the younger Little Joe would think of.

Then there's the featured female character, who is closer in age to Adam, probably even a few years his senior. When she is frightened by the storm, Joe instinctively embraces her protectively, but she pushes away, leery that this man is just one of many who expect a widow to crave any man's attentions. It would have played much more effectively with PR's imposing stature.

I also suspect the script was altered to have the outlaw sidekick repeatedly refer to Joe as "little man", because there is no way that would have been a credible line if it referred to Adam. I wonder if it was originally "big man" and meant sarcastically because he has beaten Cartwright.

It's also more in keeping with Adam's character to recognize the underlying integrity of the lead outlaw, as well as to tell the widow he'll take responsibility with the sheriff for the outlaw's escape.

It's just too bad they couldn't have juggled production schedules to allow PR to play this episode - it would have been a very fine performance. :smile
